Unfortunately for Australia, BMW prices are off the hinges, to say the least. For example, the F15 X5 starts at USD52,800 in the US, whilst in Australia, the cheapest model, the xDrive30d starts at AUD99,900 (USD94,214).
That didn't stop the guys from Car Advice from traveling all the way to Canada to test the new Sports Activity Vehicle. They got to test the xDrive30d model, the xDrive50i and the M50d, basically the cars that are currently available for order (with some exceptions for the US).
The cheapest model, the xDrive30d, proved to be very fast and nimble on the twisting roads of Vancouver, had plenty of torque and power at its disposal at any time and worked flawlessly with the 8-speed gearbox.
They also got to try the xDrive50i, with 4.4-liter V8 monster under the bonnet that develops 450 HP and 650 Nm of torque almost from idle, taking the car up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 seconds. You can probably imagine that you won't need that much power on a daily basis (except maybe when you're late to your daughter's recital).
Inside, luxury is the word that best captures the feeling you'll be experiencing. Everything looks good and, even though the dash was redesigned, you'll immediately know you're inside a BMW.
Overall, the BMW F15 X5 is the best option in its segment at the moment. The plethora of new technology incorporated in this new vehicle quickly made it jump forward compared to the E70 model and for the next 3 to 4 years every SAV enthusiast will have its choices laid out in front of him in the shape of the X5.
