At first, the new X5 will be available with 3 engines. The xDrive50i will be using a new generation N63 engine with its usual V8 and 4.4-liters but taken up to 450 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. Due to the slight loss in weight, the fuel consumption will reach 22.6 mpg (10.4 l/100km).

Going over diesels, there will be 2 engines available at first. The xDrive30d models will be fitted with BMW's 3-liter 6-cylinder engines that are turning up 258 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) returning a combined fuel consumption of 37.9 mpg (6.2 l/100km).

The second diesel will be the so called 'King Kong', on the M50d model, based on the same 3-liter engine but with 3 turbochargers, pushing out 381 HP and 740 Nm of torque. With this unit under the bonnet the X5 reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.3 seconds and returns an average fuel consumption of 35.1 mpg (6.7 l/100km).
