The US market is, by default, reluctant towards diesels but even so, the advancements in diesel engineering make this option a really profitable one. Long gone are the days when diesel could've been considered dirty and noisy, in the 21st century efficiency is paramount.
It seems like some of the first guys to notice this are the journalists. Since BMW announced it will be reintroducing more and more diesels for the US market, the guys from Car and Driver decided to take the brand new 535d out for a run.
The US 535d is actually the European 530d but, for marketing reasons, it was rebadged. It has the same 3-liter diesel with 258 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque and the same 0 to 60 mph sprint of 5.6 seconds.
While we're counting seconds over here, the main competitor for this model is actually another BMW, the ActiveHybrid5, a car that uses a petrol 3-liter engine and an electric motor to do the sprint we talked about in the same time. However, its fuel efficiency is lower.
On the road, the 535d feels just like any other 5er, including the 535i, basically the petrol counterpart. Inside you'll find the new iDrive touch system and everything you could possibly want and can also afford.
That's because the 535d starts at USD56,600 but can go up to around USD90,000 if you're not careful with the optional features. However, depending on how far you'd like to go, the car is worth every penny.
