2014 BMW F10 535d LCI Test Drive by Autoguide

With the new generation of 5 Series models, BMW is yet, once again, pushing new technology in lesser segments. What seemed reserved only for 7 Series models some time ago is now stock or optional on the 5er.

Even the engines have been refreshed, in order to bring even more luxury an exclusivity to the average driver, as the guys from Autoguide recently discovered. During their test they had the only diesel 5er Sedan in the US available, the 535d model.

Their car showed good improvements from the moment they started up the engine. The old noises and rattles were gone and before them stood a quieter, smoother engine that felt nothing like a diesel.

The 3-liter unit that makes 258 HP and 560 Nm (416 lb-ft) of torque and wears the 530d badge in Europe, has plenty of power for the hefty car and won't disappoint you in any way but that's also thanks to the 8-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA rated this car at 26 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway, leading to an average fuel consumption of 32 mpg, making this car even more efficient than the ActiveHybrid 5 model. Real life numbers showed even better results, the guys from Autoguide managing to obtain an average of 36 mpg.

On the road, the car feel refreshed compared to its predecessor but you'll have to get the adaptive dampers option. That is a must. Also a must, if you're a hardcore driver, would be the variable steering. With these two the car feels brisk, tidy and nimble, never letting you go astray.

Bottom line, the diesel is worth the extra USD1,500 compared to the petrol counterpart; it's just as fast, quiet and comfortable and it will save you plenty of money over the years.
