Replacing the 3 Series Coupe, the 4 Series will have a gruesome task to do, having to cope with a lot of responsibility, especially towards the true BMW aficionados that won’t take the name change easily.
The guys from Edmunds.com had an unusual 428i for testing purposes. I said unusual because, traditionally, most test cars are fitted with every possible option out there, leading to mind-boggling price tags that usually scare away possible customers. This one only had the M Sport and Dynamic Handling package and M Sport brakes fitted on, adding up to a total price of $47,125.

Even so, the car is a bit more expensive than its competition, when similarly configured. The Mercedes-Benz C250 is around $3,000 less and the Audi A5 will cost $5,000 less. However, that’s about the only area where the two can claim to be better than the 4 Series.

The engine response is better than any of the others, the 428i is faster in the quarter mile and on the instrumented tests they put it through. That’s only half the story though. Numbers don’t mean nothing if they don’t bring driving enjoyment too. Fortunately, the 4er delivers on the road too, with its revised suspension, front end and lower profile.

Even as a practical car, the BMW offers more luggage space in the boot and the rear seats can actually be used. I wish I had some bad things to say about it, or some areas where the Benz and Audi are better (excepting price tags) but Edmunds didn’t find any and I’m not about to invent some.
