The entry-level BMW 4 Series at the moment in the US is the simple 428i. It might seem like a cheap alternative to the full fledged 435i xDrive M Sport but it’s definitely not the case here.
The guys from Car and Driver claim it’s a car in which you can easily look smug to other people but I’m sure in the right context, those kind of problems will be soon forgotten. Just get behind the wheel and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
The 2-liter turbocharged engine is simply brilliant and still the best in its class. It makes 245 HP and 350 Nm of torque, all of the force being available from 1,250 RPM, almost idle. This way you get almost no lag whatsoever.
Mid-range, the engine is also more than comfortable, working brilliantly with the 8-speed automatic gearbox, delivering a more than satisfying performance all the way through. Since the 4-cylinder unit at the front is lighter than the 6-cylinder alternative fitted on the 435i, you’ll find the 428i to be even more agile in tight corners.
If you really want to have some fun, go for the manual gearbox and you’ll enjoy all the perks of owning a Coupe BMW. Sure, as long as you don’t sit in the back. This is a 2-door after all and, despite having plenty of space in the back, you won’t find long trips especially comfortable.
As far as the optional features go, you should get the adaptive dampers and steering. Other than that it’s really a matter of choice but you can still have a brilliant, premium car for a reasonable price, if you can contain yourself from checking every possible box on the options list.
