In Europe, diesel models are most popular, especially amongst cost-oriented customers that want the best of two worlds: affordable luxury.
With the new 4 Series out and selling like hot cakes we’re guessing the 420d model will claim the most customers over the years and the guys from CAR Magazine share out vision. That’s in Europe, at least.
The car mentioned above uses a 2-liter turbodiesel engine rated at 184 HP and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque and returns an amazing average fuel consumption, according to BMW, 4.6 l/100 km (51.1 mpg).
In the real-life test performed in the UK, the CAR editor managed to walk away with an average of 46 mpg (6.1 l/100 km) which is not bad at all, considering how test cars are usually driven.
The car is also fast and quiet, a lot quieter than its sedan counterpart, the F30 3 Series, sending less vibrations to the cockpit and making for a more enjoyable ride at high speeds on highways.
The improved chassis can also be noticed, the car being lower and wider than the 3er and offering a stiffened experience that allows you to push the car to the limit. However, this is not the M4 or 435i model and few people will ever go into Sport+ mode and floor the Coupe into corners. Most will keep going in Comfort mode, as it is the best suiting one, in combination with the 8-speed gearbox.
Bottom line, the 420d is the logical choice, combining diesel frugalness with comfort and luxury, at a reasonable price, if you can keep yourself from ticking all those additional extras you don’t really need.
