Audi has takes the wraps off the 2014 R18 e-tron quattro, a race car that the Germans will be using in the 2014 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Claimed to be the most complex race car Audi has ever built, the 2014 R18 e-tron quattro features an updated V6 TDI mid-mounted engine that power the rear wheels and a hybrid system at the front axle, an optimized flywheel energy storage system and an ERS-H (Energy Recovery System Heat that stores energy converted from heat).
As you might have already guessed, Audi Motorsport is aiming to achieve the hat-trick in the FIA World Endurance Championship and a new success in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, their mission should be a lot more difficult compared to last year, as Porsche is making a comeback to the series with a brand new LMP1 race car.
“The next Audi R18 e-tron quattro represents a completely new generation of Le Mans prototypes,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “The principles of the LMP1 regulations have fundamentally changed. The idea behind this is to achieve similarly fast lap times as in the past with considerably less energy. Making more out of less: a forward-thinking approach.”
