The current Mazda2 used to be considered one of the most fun little cars to drive. However, that was over seven years ago, before the current Ford Fiesta had made its presence felt. Now the Japanese automaker is getting ready to launch a band new car and we're more than a little excited, thanks to the recent Hazumi concept car which previewed its design.
The very first photos of this new Mazda2 have just been leaked online and found their way onto a forum called World Scoop. These are clearly press images of the car, probably intentionally let slip by the automaker to create extra hype for the upcoming launch event.

Based on the "Demio" number plates and right-hand drive interior, this is clearly the Japanese market model. But since production is likely to take place there for most global markets, all Mazda2 examples will look like this. In North America, rumor has it the "2" will be made at a new factory in Mexico, together with the anticipated CX-3 subcompact crossover. However, that won't happen until next year.

The body of the new supermini looks just like that of the Hazumi concept from a few months ago. Mazda's 6 sedan and CX-5 crossover SUV have also closely followed their concept versions, so it's not really surprising.

We love the effervescence and dynamism of the design. The Mazda2 has strong arches and sharp headlights. However, it's no groundbreaking in any way. The wheels are also kind of small compared to the 17-inch ones offered by other superminis (Kia Rio, Renault Clio).

As for the interior, it somehow looks Audi-like, thanks to circular air vents, an infotainment system sitting on top of the dash and what looks like a copy of the MMI system behind the gear shifter. Speaking of which, this car appears to have an automatic box that we've heard nothing about yet. Hopefully, the tech-savvy Japanese engineers have gotten rid of the CVT gearbox and the 4F27E 4-speed automatic.

By no means are we criticizing the new Mazda2's interior. It looks like the perfect place for a keen driver and we love the simple trim color combination, speedometer and small, sporty steering wheel. The Audi A1 really could learn a thing or two here.

The same French forum also shares one very interesting video from Mazda Thailand. It 's a review of the same car, still wearing its heavy camouflage covers. It appears a press conference to promote the upcoming supermini took place in the country only recently.

While the current generation Mazda2 is based on the Ford Fiesta, its replacement is going to be all-Mazda. The same Skyactiv technology that made other cars in their range so good will help it shed weight and reduce fuel consumption.

Editor's note: Yes! The production car still looks like Red Bird from Angry Birds.
