2013 Triumph Street Triple R Recalled for Poor Cable Management Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Triumph are recalling 1,368 motorcycles manufactured by the British maker. The campaign has number 14V548000 and is aimed at the 2012 and 2013 model years Street Triple R motorcycles. The affected bikes have been manufactured July 1, 2012 through October 1, 2013.

Triumph reports that in the affected motorcycles, the four bolts that secure the cable guides on both sides of the headstock have been installed without using a threadlock. As a result, these bolds may loosen because of vibrations and cause the cable guides to move from their designated place or even fall off completely.

Should this occur, the steering movement could be restricted by the cables no longer maintained in place by the guides, increasing the risk of a crash. There were no reports of injuries or accidents related to this issue, and Triumph also says that there are no warning signals before the bolts loosen.

Only the specified model year bikes with ABS are affected by this issue, and their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) starts with SMTTTL1066D560477 and ends with SMTL03NE4ET607416, but the manufacturer says the VINs are not sequential.

The factory stock was quarantined and modified

Even more, after the problem was acknowledged, the factory stock was quarantined and modified. As a result, motorbikes after VIN 607416 have been manufactured with the new condition bolts. If you’re not sure on the condition of the bike, it is advisable you pay a visit to your Triumph dealer and mention the manufacturer Service Bulletin 501.

Triumph has not provided a notification schedule so far, but dealers have been instructed to replace the fours bolts with new ones containing threadlock. The operation is free of charge, as usual.

The 2013 Triumph Street Triple R was introduced with a new frame with a lower center of gravity, but it looks like nobody is perfect.
