In Europe or America, a Toyota is a Toyota, but in Japan, there are many different brands that are segregated to different showroom types. One of the oldest established themes with the carmaker is the Crown. In fact, a number of global cars owe their names to this car, like the Corolla, which actually means ‘small crown’ in Latin.
The Toyota Crown has survived as a mid-sized sedan in the Japanese market since 1955. For a while, it was available as a coupe and even a wagon, and stripped down versions are used by taxi companies across Japan. Yet, despite its popularity, very few people outside of Japan know about it, something we want to change today, be telling you about the latest generation.
This is the 14th generation of the Crown, which is going to be offered both as the Crown Royal and Crown Athlete, both with slightly different looks. The main between the two is that the Royal features Mercedes-like headlights and Audi-like bar grille, while the sportier Athlete has Mesh and prominent fog lights.
Both are offered with a choice of three powertrains, the base 2.5-liter V6 with 200 HP (203 PS) and 243Nm (179 lb-ft), a hybrid powertrain that combines the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder from a Camry with an electric motor to produce 176 HP (178 PS) and 221Nm (163 lb-ft), and the Athlete-exclusive 3.5-liter V6 that produces 311 hp (315 PS) and 377Nm (278 lb-ft) with an eight-speed auto box.
