When Chrysler announced they fitted a new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that's rated at 305HP and 269 lb.-ft. of torque into the Ram 1500, we knew they had a game-changer on their hands.
And indeed the 2013 Ram 1500 is very impressive, not only for this powerful engine, but also because of the introduction of a new eight-speed automatic transmission called TorqueFlite 8 that replaces the old V6's four-speed auto.
The rest of the improvements to the powertrain focus on saving fuel. Chrysler has added start-stop to the Ram 1500, which is supposed to improve economy by 3.3 percent city driving. Also new is a thermal management system that raises the temperature for the engine, which makes it more efficient.
The other big crowd pleaser besides the Pentastar V6 is a new frame, designed to incorporate high-strength steel and new box floor cross-members.
