When it comes to turbocharged petrol engines, Porsche is one of the top players on the market, with the twin-turbo flat six on the 911 Turbo being a technical masterpiece. When the outgoing 997 generation debuted, this was the first turbocharged petrol engine in the world to offer variable turbine geometry and now that the German carmaker is preparing to launch a new generation of the vehicle (see the latest spy shots here), it seems that Porsche wants to step up its game.
Porsche is now working on a tri-turbo setup, similar to that used on the new M Perfomance Vehicles BMW diesels and future M3 (still a rumor). According to autocar, Porsche has recently submitted a patent application for a system that uses three individual turbochargers: a small unit placed closed to the engine (for low rev response) and two heftier ones similar to the Borg Warner units used by the outgoing generation.
This should bring multiple benefits, from enhancing throttle response and offering a more linear power delivery, to increasing efficiency and output. The new engine should deliver over 525 hp and while this doesn’t seem like a huge improvement over today’s figure of 500 hp, the aforementioned bouquet of assets will make the new generation far superior in the real world.
Since the 911 GT2 and GT2 RS use a tweaked version of the Turbo’s engine, they too will inherit this technical goodie. However, those version are still far away from their launch. As for the new 991 generation 911, this should arrive by the end of the year.
