If you want a proper super SUV, yet you don`t want it to be German or British, and you want lots of kit, great styling and lots of power thrown in, the all-new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the SRT8 model to be precise, is definitely a viable option.
With a 470 hp 6.4-liter V8, which is now mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the new SRT8 can crack the benchmark sprint almost a second quicker than the outgoing model (around five seconds), before topping out at 257 km/h or 160 mph.
It is also easily the meanest-looking of the super SUVs, and it is a perfect example of American cars, which do not try to be European in their design, and are all the better for it. With the bluff and square front end, it is the kind of SUV which makes all cars in front of you change lanes and let you pass by.
It gets wider wheelarches and deeper, more aggressive bumpers, large alloys and big Brembo brakes, all of which just add to the sporty character and appeal of the Grand Cherokee SRT8.
We hope to be able to drive the new ‘hot’ Grand Cherokee, so as to compare it with its European rivals, and see whether or not it is actually on par with them, as a vehicle, not just in terms of performance. It needs to feel good on the move, be of high quality inside and turn lots of heads as you pass by in a wave of noise - very important qualities in its niche.
