Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez had the fastest time during the first day of tests in Texas, at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). These private tests also had the Yamaha factory team present and LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl.
The Honda rookie managed to lap the COTA in 2m04s619, some .428 ahead of his more experienced team mate Dani Pedrosa, and .672 clear of Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo. Bradl was more that 1.4s slower than Marquez, yet he ranked in front of Valentino Rossi, almost 1.9 sec behind the fastest Honda.
Lorenzo mentioned some problems with the bike at maximum leaning angles and declared that his team will try a new setup for the next day. In case the new setup works as expected, Yamaha could already head for home, despite the COTA tests being a 3-day event.
The 5 riders have been joined by two CRT pilots: Blake Young from Attack Performance and Michael Barnes from GPTech. Both CRT riders will have wildcard races in the official Texas event, as well as at Laguna Seca and Indianapolis.
