Dramatic and eventful qualifying session for the top 10 riders in the Australian GP. Jorge Lorenzo, who was the fastest of them all in the combined time sheets, managed to secure a new pole position, a critical advantage over Marc Marquez, who is second on the grid.
Valentino Rossi completes the first grid, with Bautista, Pedrosa and Cutchlow in the second row, Smith, Hayden and Dovizioso filling the third row. Edwards and de Puniet are in positions 11 and 12, in the same line with Iannone.

The former circuit record (1m28s665) held by the new MotoGP Legend Casey Stoner was blown to smithereens, as Lorenzo clocked 1m27s899, helped by the new surface of the track.

And to make things even more interesting, the Mallorcan did this after a much too close encounter with the local wildlife: his bike clipped a seagull.

As for the Sunday race, Marquez crashed anew at Phillip Island. He's safe and sound, but crashing a lot is not exactly the best race preparation. He still needs to extend his lead over Lorenzo to 51 or more points if securing the world title in Australia is to be done.
