2013 MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo Crashes at 238 KM/H, Breaks Collar Bone, Misses Assen

Bad news for Yamaha Racing Team and for the fans of Jorge Lorenzo: the reigning champion crashed really bad earlier today (Thursday) and he will miss the Dutch MotoGP round at Assen.

Lorenzo's spectacular crash happened in the very fast Hoge Heide right-hand turn, just before the infamous Geert Timer chicane at the end of the Assen lap. It looks like Lorenzo's highside crash occurred as he rode his Yamaha across the white line and given the water on the track, he lost grip.

Lorenzo came off his bike at a mind-boggling 238 km/h (just under 148 mph) and his first contact with the Dutch asphalt was with his left hand and his head. Both Jorge and his bike slid away tens of meters, on wet grass and the Assen track, respectively.

Even though the Spaniard was back on his feet, if visibly shaken, the crash left him with a clean, 2-piece collar bone fracture, as Doctor Xavier Mir told us. He was rushed to the Assen hospital and underwent CT scans for his upper body half, with prospects of being flown to Barcelona tomorrow.

Given the high speed Lorenzo crashed at, Dr. Mir says detailed investigations will search for injuries in his head, thorax and abdomen. The same collar bone was kept in place with a titanium plate, following Lorenzo's crash in the 250cc-class back in 2005, during his home race at the Circuit de Catalunya. The plate was removed 4 years later.

We wish the Cobra a fast recovery, so we might see him ride again at Sachsenring.
