Mitsubishi’s 2013 Outlander Sport has recently received a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This comes after the vehicle’s 2012 and 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick titles.
The Outlander Sport received “good” overall ratings for the overlap frontal crash, small overlap frontal crash, side impact, rollover tests. In addition, the same ratings were offered for the evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.
Mitsubishi credits the Outlander Sport’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body structure for the good resistance of the passenger cell.
The new Top Safety Pick+ title was introduced by the IIHS last year and includes an additional small overlap test. This sees 25 percent of the front end (driver’s side) hitting a 5-foot-tall (1.5 meters) barrier at 40 mph (65 km/h).
