2013 MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 Review by Car and Driver

MINI went overboard a couple of years ago when they released the first ever 4-door model in the brand's history. Needless to say that the die-hard fans, that were already appalled by the ever growing size of the hatch, found this to be a real sacrilege.

On top of that, this year, the British company announced that the Countryman will be available in John Cooper Works versions around the world and things got wild. The guys from Car and Driver wanted to test this bad body and took it for a spin.

The car MINI USA provided for the test had almost every possible feature on it and arrived with a price tag of USD46,045, almost too much to bare, even for a premium brand such as MINI.

For that kind of money, you get a 1.6-liter engine that makes 218 HP and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque, 4 seats, a manual 6-speed gearbox, the ALL4 all-wheel-drive transmission and plenty of options, including the JCW body kit, wheels, the connected infotainment system and many more.

Inside, you'll be comfortable enough, the engineers deciding that the days of back breaking suspension settings are gone. Nevertheless, the car is plenty potent on the track but it also allows you to enjoy daily drives and even longer trips.

The infotainment system might need some getting used to but in the end you'll get the better of it. As a small complaint, the backseats don't offer too much space, so getting more than 2 adults in the back doesn't seem like a good idea.

Price apart, this car still gives you what you want from a MINI. It's nimble and agile and provides plenty of thrills for a 4-door crossover. However, since it starts at USD35,645, you won't see too many of them on the streets and that's really a shame.
