2013 MINI JCW Convertible Review by Autos.ca

When it comes to open top fun with a decent amount of money, you can't go much better than the MINI Convertible. Go for the S or John Cooper Works version and that fun goes even further.

The guys from Autos.ca wanted to say goodbye to the current generation of MINI's convertible, the proper way, by taking a JCW model out for a quick test drive. For those of you new to the MINI scene, the John Cooper Works model means you get the most hardcore engine version and body kit for your MINI.

That engine is a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder unit that develops 211 HP and 260 Nm (191 lb-ft) of torque. Hooked up to a proper 6-speed manual gearbox and combined with the traditional MINI go-kart feel, this baby is more than fun, it'll get your blood pumping really fast.

Get this convertible in Sport mode and you'll notice a new exhaust burble that also has a meaner growl than usual, making for some pretty intense moments at the stop light, while waiting for someone to try and race you.

The 100 km/h (62 mph) speed is reached in an official 6.9 seconds but it feels a lot faster. On the practical side, the 4 seats it has offer plenty of space for a normal family. Of course, people a lot taller than the average might have some issues with the wind but that's only with the top down.

Fuel consumption is pretty good too and, during their test, the guys got numbers really close to the official claims (28.6 mpg city, 39 mpg highway), getting 30 mpg highway and 23.5 mpg for the city, whilst only on Sport mode and flooring it.

Bottom line, the JCW is a lot of fun, especially with the top down, no matter what the competition might say. However, there's a price tag attached to this model and it isn't cheap but you can live with this car every day and that is most important.
