After every photo you see in the photo gallery below was leaked a couple of days ago, Mercedes really had no choice but to release the full spec of the car ahead of what was supposed to be a full reveal at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show in January.
There’s nothing that revolutionary about the engines revealed today, but the R231 generation of the car is very significant, as it uses aluminum for most of the body in order to save weight, even in the suspension components. By doing this, the Germans have managed to strip as much as 306 pounds (140 kg) off the car, which they describe as an overweight passenger and his luggage.
Right now, only two engine options have been announced, a 3.5-liter V6 for the SL 350, rated at 306 hp and 370 Nm of torque. It uses just 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) 0.3 seconds faster than its predecessor.
On the other hand, the bigger SL 500 uses twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 which is much more impressive than its predecessor. The 435 hp (429 hp in US spec) this produces makes it 12% more powerful than the old R230 version of the 500.
Cars like this are all about the open air, so we have to also mention that the roof offers light magnesium frame and it takes less than 20 seconds to open or close. Like the new SLK, it’s also available in the Magic Sky Control spec, which changes the opacity at the flip of a switch.
