The new Lexus GS is taking us on a bit of a roller-coster ride - first we were excited with the teaser image, only to be dissipated with the leaked images of a white car that could impress nobody. The waters have cleared a bit, and we can say that it’s actually a good looking car, probably one of the best of the past two years.
The new styling features a more aggressive front end, but it also brings presence to a car that didn’t have much going for it other than its size. The Japanese carmaker has released the first couple of video showing the GS 350, and we have to say the car is more at home in the city than it’s ever been.
As you’d expect from a car that makes a clear design departure, they basically say that from now on they’ll start to make better, more interesting vehicles, the GS being a sort of launching pad.
In the US, the launch of the GS was made with the 350 version that gets a 306 horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which will be available with either rear- or all-wheel drive and a six-speed sequential shift automatic gearbox.
The European versions will also come in the less powerful 250 spec that presumably uses the 2.5-liter in the IS. There’s also a GS 450 hybrid on the way that will be offered on both sides of the pond.
The new GS can be equipped with a pre-collision system that uses the radar cruise control system to detect a probable accident and an infrared camera that monitors the driver’s eyes. If it senses you aren’t paying attention and a collision is imminent, it will sound an alarm, after which it will automatically activate the brakes, reducing the severity of the impact.
