Ford has finally revealed SVT’s full hand with the unveiling of the brand new Convertible version of the 2013 Shelby GT500 at the Chicago Auto Show. To mark the anniversary of the Special Vehicle Team (SVT), Chicago was chosen as this is the venue where back in 1992 which they unveiled the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. Also, you’ve got SVT written all over the door sills.

The GT500 Convertible is powered by the same engine as the coupe, a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine rated at 650 hp and 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) of torque. Some might not appreciate this, but we think that forcing a speed limited upon the car for the first time is absolutely a necessity. This engine is an impressive step up from the 540 horsepower of the old 5.4-liter.

"The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is," said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. "All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis."
