2013 Dakar: Lopez Takes Stage 13, Despres Still the Overall Leader

With only one more stage in the 2013 Dakar, there is still room for serious racing, as things aren't yet decided. Chaleco Lopez triumphed in Stage 13 on home ground and is highly motivated for the final ride ending in Chilean capital, Santiago.

8'15" adrift from the overall leader Cyril Despres, Lopez adds that he's willing to fight down to the last kilometer and a win in his own country is more than he could ever wish. Taking no unnecessary risk in this stage, 4-times Dakar winner Despres came in second at the end of the 13th stage. With the first part of the stage needing good navigation, Despres felt at ease, but as the second half was about very fast riding, he had to pick up the pace and keep the gap between him and the Chilean at bay.

Husqvarna riders Paulo Goncalves and Joan Barreda Bort came in 3rd and 5th, adding valuable points for the team. However, Goncalves is 10th in overall, 2 minutes down on Verhoeven (Yamaha) so he could technically do better today. Barreda is down in the 17th position overall.

Good overall ranking for Honda with a strong comeback: Rodriguez in 7th overall, followed by Pizzolito. Even if there's still one stage to ride, things can happen, so it ain't over til it's over. Though it looks like we'll see a full KTM podium this year.
