New AWD bikes from Steve Christini are available, and we might just see this new all-wheel-drive system catching. Instead of the old hydraulic pumps which tended to rob energy from the engine, the Christini technology uses the very same energy transferred to the primary transmission.
Using a secondary chain, the Christini system transfers torque to a series of other chains and sprockets installed in the lower triple clamp, and deliver it to the one-way clutch of the front wheel by means of shafts.
The genius behind the design is the fact that the system consumes very little energy (or none at all) when not in use, and will engage the FWD only when the the rear wheel loses traction. It's all down to a complex drive ratio between the two wheels, but as complicated it looks, it seems to work well.
Basically it;s like pedaling a bike downhill: gravity makes you move, so the pedals are not driving the bike forward: reach the end of the descent, start losing the gravity pull force and your pedaling will start to be effective moving the bike.
