2013 BMW F30 320i Test Drive by MotorTrend

This year BMW introduced a new entry-level 3 Series model in the shape of the 320i. What is it? It's the same F30 3 Series 328i but with a bit less power and a lower price tag, to appeal to as many customers as possible.

MotorTrend wanted to see if this is actually a viable buy, and if most people that are looking for value will be satisfied with the 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque this car has.

The 320i starts at $33,475 in the US, making it the cheapest 3 Series you can get. Sure, it has 60 HP less than the 328i but it's also nearly $4,000 cheaper. The stock equipment doesn't include much, but it does make you feel like you're inside a premium car, which is a good thing.

On the road you'll feel the traditional BMW driving experience, even with less than 200 HP and curvy roads are your allies, especially when the car is fitted with the $550 optional sport suspension that really keeps you in check, especially when you go in sport mode.

The 8-speed automatic transmission is masterfully crafted and pairs perfectly with the engine. The throttle response is quick in Sport mode and a bit lazy in Eco Pro or Comfort mode, just as it should.

Compared to the Mercedes-Benz C250 and the Lexus IS250, the 320i is faster to 60 mph by 0.2 seconds and 0.5 respectively but for the random buyer that means absolutely nothing. People going for this car won't do drag races between stop lights but instead will be looking for a good car that is easy to maintain and will get them from point A to B in a comfortable (and sometimes sporty) manner. For that, the 320i is a master and a pretty good choice.
