Since the facelifted 7 Series was released, BMW fitted it with a lot of new functions and it looks more welcoming now. The guys from Autos.ca decided to take one for a couple of days and see how it feels to be a high-ranking CEO.
As far as the $100,000 price tag segment goes, you can't really go wrong. All the cars in this segment do their job well, and your choice will probably be limited to a certain brand preference or just basic looks.
The 740Li xDrive comes with the incredible 3-liter 6-cylinder turbocharged N55 engine but with a bump in power. This version has 315 Hp and 450 Nm (330 lb-ft) of torque and handles the almost 2 tone weight bravely.
You won't feel the car to be sluggish and you won't feel it's weight anywhere around the city (excepting the overcrowded parking lots, where the massive length will daze you). That's not just the merit of the exceptional engine under the hood, it's also due to the phenomenal chassis and the all-wheel-drive transmission.
Inside, everything is luxurious and all the buttons are easy to read, easy to use and make for a beautiful dashboard. However, it's most likely to ride in the backseat of this car if you buy it and leave the driving into the capable hands of a chauffeur. In this case you'll mostly be riding around town in the Comfort mode which will make you feel like you're riding on clouds.
There are so many interesting things you notice about this car that it's absolutely impossible to write them down without boring the hell out of anyone, no matter how big of a car freak he/she is.
The doors have a feature that allows you to leave them open in any given position, without falling into one predesigned spot or hitting you when you're not paying attention. Furthermore, they close extremely easy, with the slightest impulse.
Everything in this car feels good, you can't really find a flaw. Even the fuel consumption is incredible for such a big car. Overall, the 7er 'drank' 11.1 l/100km (21 mpg) over the whole test, which is not bad for a 2 tone car over winter time, with winter tires and slippery roads.
Bottom line, the ones going for a 7 Series will want it for its trademark BMW dynamics and will love it, even with a 6-cylinder under the hood. Other choices are good too, like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Jaguar XJ, Audi A8 but all of these cars are so close that it will eventually come down to brand recognition.
