By now, just about every corner and facet of the V40 should be known to you from the official photos and videos that have been leaked. We have a sneaking suspicion the slip-up was intentional, but whatever the case, the Swedes have decided to stop keeping the car under wraps.
So, let’s start with the dimensions. The V40 four-door hatchback measures 4,369 mm (172 inches) in length, 2,041 mm (80.3 inches) in width and 1,445 mm (56.9 inches) in height. This makes it about the same size as the Ford Focus 5-door launched last year.

The full engine range has not been fully detailed, but the biggest surprise to us was that Volvo says the T5 has been kept in the range.

According to Carscoop, the petrol lineup starts with a 150PS 1.6-liter turbo that pushes the V40 to 100km/h (62mph) in 8.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h (131mph). The same displacement unit re-designated as the T4 has 180PS and is good for 0 to to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h (140mph).

The T5 that has been Volvo’s trademark for so long now puts out 254PS and offers a hot hatch standard sprint time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h (155mph).

Moving on to the diesel range, this is where the economy magic takes place, with a D2 1.6-liter turbodiesel delivering 115PS in combination with emissions of only 94g/km. The range is complete by the D3 and D4, both 2.0-liter units with 150PS and 177PS respectively.

"The all-new V40 wraps you in a super-comfortable cockpit with outstanding ergonomics and technology that make you feel informed, focused and relaxed. This driver-centric approach is what modern Volvos are all about," says Stefan Jacoby.

"The all-new V40 is the most intelligent and safe Volvo model so far. All its features are designed around the driver, helping him or her stay alert and well informed to avoid collisions and dangerous situations," says Hakan Abrahamsson, Vehicle Line Director C Cars & V40 Vehicle Programme Manager."With this class-leading safety package, including enhanced focus on pedestrian protection, the all-new V40 aims for a full star rating in the new, sharpened 2012 Euro NCAP safety tests."
