2012 Volvo S60 Recalled for Faulty Fuel Pump Software

The new 2012 Volvo S60 has not been available on the US market for that long, but it seems that it will be returning to dealerships shortly, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on its website that Volvo has to recall 7,558 units.

The S60 models affected were built between November 18, 2010 and May 5, 2011 and a possible fuel starvation issue could arise under certain driving conditions. According to the NHTSA, this could result in a possible engine stall - a serious cause for concern.

"The software for the fuel pump units may not be compatible with all fuel pumps and components, resulting in insufficient fuel transfer in the pump unit," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Under certain driving conditions, there may be engine hesitation and possible engine stall even though the fuel gauge indicates up to 1/4 of fuel left in the tank. This condition increases the risk of a vehicle crash."

Volvo has stated that a total of 23 complaints have been received in the US and that it is not aware of any reports alleging injuries, fatalities or crashes related to this condition.

To fix the problem, Volvo will direct affected S60 owners to a nearby dealer for a no-cost upgrade of the engine control module software. The carmaker will notify owners and the recall is expected to begin on or about June 17th, 2011.

In case you do crash, it might come as a comfort to know that the 2012 Volvo S60 has recently earned the IIHS top safety pick after getting top scores at all crash tests, including front, side, rollover and rear evaluations.
