2012 Toyota Camry for Australia Unveiled

Another market, another grille is the repeating theme for the brand new Toyota Carmy, as it made its debut in Australia, sporting the grille of the American model. The sedan from Down Under will be locally assembled in Melbourne and will also be exported from there to other market.

"Camry will be a significant contributor to the Australian and Victorian economies, and holds the key to a strong future for the local automotive sector," said Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner. "In addition to local sales, Camry will be exported to more than 12 countries, including Saudi Arabia, other Middle East countries and New Zealand, earning export sales revenue well in excess of $1 billion a year."

Prices in Australia start at AUD30,490 for the base Altise, which comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This version has 178 horsepower and 231 Nm of torque, an output that is increased to 181 hp and 235 Nm in the in all the other Altara S, SX and SL trim levels, which all get dual exhausts for better breathing.

The new 2.5-liter is thus more powerful than its predecessor, while fuel economy across the range is just 7.8 litres/100km - an improvement of one litre per 100km, which translates to an extra 100 km traveled on a full tank of fuel.

The hybrid version will arrive early next year, and there’s talk of other other engine options in the future.
