2012 Scion iQ Selling from Under $16,000

After delaying the American launch of the Scion iQ, which was originally scheduled to happen by March of this year, to sometime this summer, Toyota’s North American arm has finally done it, with the little hatchback set ti arrive at US dealerships starting from this fall.

There will be a four-part launch of the small iQ: the western part of the U.S. will get the iQ first this October, followed by the South in January and then the East and Midwest shortly afterward.

While details are still sketchy at this point, what we do know from company officials speaking at the IQ’s launch in California is that pricing for the model will start from $15,995.

For that, buyers get a base model equipped with Pandora integration, but there will also be one higher trim level that will include a GPS system. Furthermore, customers will also be able to personalize their ride with both go-fast and look-fast bits, including carbon fiber trim, lowering springs, and subwoofers.

However, with all the gadgetry, this price tag still makes it a little more expensive then competitors like the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Yaris and the Nissan Versa, so it might have some struggling to do.

Safety wise, the iQ will come standard with 10 SRS airbags, including the world’s first rear-window curtain airbag. Additional safety equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Traction Control (TRAC).

The tiny Scion is powered with a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder engine that produces over 90 horsepower and features the latest dual VVT-i technology. The unit is coupled with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for the North American market.
