2012 Peugeot 508 Initial Details

The first info regarding the replacement model for the 407 and 607 models have been released by French manufacturer Peugeot. Previewed at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show by the "5 by Peugeot" concept, the model will be launched on the European market sometime in 2011 and will make its first public appearance at the Paris Auto Show this fall. The SW version of the 508 will be unveiled at the next important auto show after Paris, Geneva 2011.

According to the info available, the 508 will keep basically the same dimensions as the 5. Even more, the 508 will likely also receive 5's 2.0-liter HDi FAP163 bhp engine and its 37 bhp electric motor, becoming the French carmaker's first production hybrid model.

The hybrid 508 will be launched later than the regular versions, probably in 2012. Given its hybrid propulsion means, the 508 hybrid will be a four wheel drive, with the regular engine powering the front wheels and the electric motors spinning the rear ones.

According to mibz.com, the 508 will no longer use the engines fitted onto the 407 without giving them a proper efficiency make-over first. The 2.2l diesel unit will be scrapped, as will other EURO 4 compliant engines.

This means the 508 will be powered by diesel engines which will include the 2.0 HDi (160 bhp) and the 3.0l V6 with a six speed automatic transmission with 237 bhp (this latter engine is more of a maybe rather than a sure). On the petrol side, the star of the line-up will be the 1.6l turbo (156 bhp).
