Mercedes recently unveiled the brand new M-Class at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show back in September, a vehicle that will underpin a number of other crossover, including one with a coupe-ish body like the BMW X6. The M will also be built Stateside so it comes as no surprise that the brand new AMG version will bow at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show this week.
Ahead of the motor show debut, Mercedes has released a number of photos showing the lines of the ML63 AMG, as well as the preliminary technical details. The big news is that that it will use the fresh 5.5-liter V8 twin-turbo which will develop 518 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of peak torque.
Instead of focusing on massive power increases (the new generation only bring 15 hp more), the AMG will get much better milage, which is expected to be improved by 33 percent. However, you won’t be able to call it slow either, because Mercedes says it will do 0 to 60 mph (98 km/h) in just 4.7 seconds, which matched with the top speed of 155 mph or 250 km/h (electronically limited), is quite impressive.
If you’re scared of the big bad BMW X5 M, you can also have the AMG Performance Package with 550 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, which is also unrestricted and reaches 175 mph or 282 km/h.
Standard performance kit for the 2012 ML63 AMG includes 20-inch wheels (21-inch optional), active body control to cope with the roll in the corners, high-performance brakes, xenon headlights, a full bodykit, illuminated sill panels, quad exhaust tips that are new. You also have designo premium leather trim which is very nice, but we’re not fond of how the soft looks of the new generation M work with the AMG package.
