2012 Impala Gets New 3.6-liter V6

General Motors’ W-Body platform that underpins the current generation Chevrolet Impala has been around since 1988. But after helping bring to life dozens of other GM sedans over the years, only the Impala soldiers on.

While the car, which is long overdue for a radical transformation, is keeping its platform for the 2012 model year, the good news is that it will receive a hart transplant in the form of GM’s 3.6-liter V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, according to GM Inside News. This will be the only powertrain offered for the car, replacing the old 3.5-liter and 3.9-liter V6s.

As for the new Impala, that has been rescheduled for the 2014 model year, while no other upgrades are scheduled for the current generation model in the foreseeable future.

The current generation remains largely unchanged design-wise from the model which was introduced at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. The car’s base engine at that time came in the form of 3.5-liter V6 that churned out 211 horsepower. A more powerful SS version was also introduced at the time, equipped with the first small-block V8 (Chevrolet's 5.3-litre V8 with Displacement on Demand, which produced 303 hp) with front-wheel drive. This made it one of the world's most powerful front wheel drive vehicles at the time.

The interior was also completely revised and featured wood trim center console with chrome accents on all major control buttons. The dashboard came with a chrome Impala logo embedded in the wood grain trim, which extended onto the doors.
