Despite being a good competitor for the Focus on the European market and becoming even better with the all-new generation, we never got to do the little Hyundai i30 hatch justice when the South Korean automaker recently announced it reveal. So with the auto show reveal now taking place in Frankfurt, it’s the perfect time for us to do right by the five-door.
This is an all-new design that speaks the same design language as US models like the Elantra, but with a bit of European accent, as it’s got a slightly different grille. We have to admit that this is the first of the Hyundai ‘i’ models we’ve actually liked from this point of view.
When the car hits the European market early next year, it will offer its customers a choice of two direct-injection gasoline engines with a displacement of 1.4-liters and 1.6-liters, and two CRDi turbo diesels with exactly the same two capacities. You won’t be racing between the lights, but the top of the bunch has 135 horsepower for you to play with using a manual gearbox.
“The new-generation i30 is recognizable thanks to the Hyundai family face with its signature hexagonal-shaped front grille and the jewel-like design of the headlamps, together with distinctive daytime running lights. These lights present an angular shape within a more softly-edged recess, adding a strong personality to the vehicle, as well as a sense of refinement and luxury,” says Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre.
“Through the profile of the new generation i30, a strong character line runs over the front and rear wheelarches all the way to the tail lamps. A softer, lower character line rises up the car’s flank creating a play of light and shadow – a fundamental feature of fluidic sculpture,” Thomas Burkle concluded.
Next year, will probably get to see a bunch of other bodies for the i30, most likely a 3-door or a sedan. And let’s not forget that the Elantra this is based on has a Tourer version in the States.
