The first image of the new Hyundai i-oniq Concept car has been released, ahead of the concept coupe’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week. This car puts a clear focus on low emissions and the environment.
The i-oniq is technically a hatchback, but its slender shape has more in common with a coupe than it does with a hatch. The nose is a bit reminiscent of the Lamborghini Estoque, while the grille has some Mazda grin inserted into it. Attention to detail is shown by the LED headlights and the “penthouse” panoramic roof.
At 4.4 metres long, i-oniq has space for four occupants in its driver-oriented cabin. High-tech equipment in the driver interface and controls reflects contemporary and future premium consumer electronics technology, Hyundai says.
The drivetrain of the car is electric with a range extender. A 1.0-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine is mated, via a generator, to a lithium ion electric motor which produces 109 PS. The all-electric range of the battery is up to 120 km, but with the help of the range extender it will travel for 700 km on a full tank. Hyundai says that this drivetrain is capable of delivering an ultra-low emission level of just 45 g/km of CO2.
Senior Vice President and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, Allan Rushforth, commented, “The i-oniq concept has been created to reflect the new thinking that runs through the Hyundai brand. It has a bold design, inside and out, that provokes contemplation on the future of automotive possibilities, and a powertrain that highlights one of the ways in which we could power future products – wrapped in a package that exudes premium qualities.”
autoevolution will be attending the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
