2012 Fiat Panda to Be Produced in Italy

Italian manufacturer Fiat is getting ready to start the production of the new Panda model, a vehicle that is hoped to build on the success of the previous generation, in Italy, at the facility in Pomigliano.

The facility has been at the center of dispute between the Italian car maker and its workers, who were unable in 2010 to agree on the future production site for the new Panda. In the end, Fiat had it its way, with the model now set to roll off the assembly lines in Italy, instead of the ones in the Tychy plant in Poland.

The Pomigliano plant workers also seem to be pleased by the decision Fiat made. The facility itself has long been one of the least productive in the Fiat chain, with the workers there being among the most disgruntled the car maker has.

The Poland facility, now without one of its key products, will continue to manufacture one other successful Italian model, the 500, which will be built alongside the Ford Ka.

According to Autonews, the production is set to begin in November 2011, with the first cars to be delivered in the first months of next year. The details surrounding the new model have not yet been released.

According to the rumors that surfaced in 2009, when Fiat was trying to land a deal with Chrysler, news of the Panda model being on the list of cars to be launched in the US surfaced. The news, yet unconfirmed, said that the Panda might be sold in the US under the Jeep nameplate.
