2012 Dodge Viper Will Use Fiat Technology

Dodge execs have decided the new Viper will use a lot of components from parent company Fiat, in order to improve the performance and keep costs down. However, the iconic American sportscar will have its own platform rather than use too much from Ferrari’s and Alfa Romeo’s product lines.

A few months back, Fiat gave production the green light, when Fiat Group chief Sergio Marchionne revealed a preview of the car to Dodge dealers in September. But back then, the plan was to make extensive use of Fiat Group’s parts, including the platform and engine from the Alfa Romeo’s 8C Competizione.

However, Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles has now revealed that the Viper will get a chassis set-up designed with assistance from Fiat, but not derived from any current product. Gilles, who is very passionate about the new model, wants to keep as much of the classic Viper shape as possible. If the 8C’s platform were to be used, than the rearward cabin - long bonnet configuration - would be lost.

According to Autocar, Gilles wants the new car to have “more forgiving” performances and to be cheaper than the old generation, attracting new customers. The idea of equipping the Viper with Ferrari’s V8 powerplant has been completely ruled out but it is still unclear what kind of engine will go under that huge bonnet. It’s thought that two engines could be offered in the new Viper: an 8.4-liter V10, possibly using Fiat’s patented MultiAir technology, or an entry-level V8 from Chrysler’s range.
