Land Rover has a stylish new crossover - the Evoque - and it’s hard for the existing models to compete for looks and style. We’ve just reported on the improvements brought to the 2012 model year Range Rover Sport, and it’s more of the same for the Discovery 4, which is sold as the LR4 in the States.
The most important change is that addition of a new ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic transmission on the 3.0-liter SDV6 diesel engine which also benefits from a power boost.
The gearbox was first fitted to the diesel V8 Range Rover for 2011 and has helped improve fuel consumption to 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers (26.7mpg US or 32.1mpg UK) in the combined European test cycle, while bring down CO2 emissions from 244g/km to 230g/km.
Instead of the regular stick selection, the Discovery 4 comes equipped as standard with the 'Drive Select' rotary gear shift and steering wheel-mounted paddle shift.
For 2012 the 3.0-liter V6 diesel produces 256-horses, up from 245HP, while peak torque sits at 600Nm (443 lb-ft). This is enough for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 112 mpg (180 km/h).
"Improved performance, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced design and equipment levels, consolidate the Discovery 4's position as the most capable and versatile all-purpose vehicle on and off the road today. The Discovery 4 is quite simply in a class of its own," said Colin Green, Land Rover UK Managing Director.
From a design point of view, the improved Discovery gets four more alloy wheel choices, three new optional equipment packages and a better audio and navigation systems throughout the range.
The Vission Assist Pack with Xenon Adaptive Front Headlamps including Cornering Lamps, Automatic Headlamps with High Beam Assist and the Surround Camera System with Approach Lamps, Tow Assist and Tow Hitch Assist.
