With 580 horsepower on tap from a race-tuned V8, the ZL1 needs to be as sure footed as it can be to gets the most power down and get better lap times. To keep the tires firmly planted to the track at the 170 mph (273 km/h) it reaches on the fastest bits of the Nurburgring, GM engineers made sure it has a bit of downforce.
The only problem was that the regular Camaro SS produces lift at high speed, just like any regular car, in order to reduce friction with the road and get better milage. But the ZL1 was reengineered with downforce in a wind tunnel, and they got 65 pounds of downforce at an equivalent 150 mph (241 km/h) – compared to 200 pounds of lift in a Camaro SS.
