2012 British Motor Show Canceled

The 2012 British Motor Show has been canceled. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the organizer of the event, has consulted with the representatives of the UK motor industry and decided that the 2012 edition of the event will not be held.

This comes after this year’s edition of the Show, which was supposed to take place during the summer, was canceled in March last year due to the global downturn and the lack of proper support from automotive producers.

The British International Motor Show has been a tremendously successful showcase for the UK motor industry. In recent years the show has played a less important role in influencing new car buyers and vehicle manufacturers are focusing their limited resources on events and activities that have a more direct impact on brand awareness and consumer decisions,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

"The UK has a strong, diverse and highly competitive motor manufacturing industry, home to globally successful companies and iconic products admired around the world. Both SMMT and the industry are committed to displaying the achievements of the sector and providing our customers with an opportunity to experience the full breadth of models available in the UK,” Everitt concluded.

The British International Motor Show was initially ran at Crystal Palace in 1903. Subsequently, the show moved to Olympia in 1905 and Earls Court in 1937, where it ran until 1976. Back then, the show became a biennial event, moving to Birmingham’s NEC in 1978. In 2006, the show was moved to ExCel London. Its latest edition, which was held in 2008, included over 600 cars and 60 automakers and a public attendance number of 472,300 people.

However, the world of British automotive shows isn't as dark as it might seem. We are saying this because the 2010 editions of the Salon Prive and Goodwood Festival of Speed have been highly successful events.
