Launched back in 2012, the sixth generation 3 Series was immediately adopted by the guys from Car and Driver. They had a 328i Sport Line model with a manual gearbox for 2 months now and covered 27,000 miles (43,200 km).
Over all these miles, the car saw the insides of a service station just twice. The first time for the usual 14,000 miles check-up and the second time almost 13,000 miles later to repair the fuel filler cap that just wouldn't open (an usual problem around Michigan, due to the weather).

Just as we're used to, the German engineers are precise when it comes to anything, that includes the fuel consumption figures. The sticker said 27 mpg (8.7 l/100km) on a combined cycle and it was dead on as this was the number they got after 2 months of using the car.

With the 1000 miles per week the 328i does while at C&D's headquarters, you can probably imagine that it wasn't exactly spared from any kind of duties. Actually, it barely got to cool off in between drivers.

The only complaints they had were addressed to the start/stop function that might be a little to harsh when it stops the engine, a matter that will probably be easily fixed in the future.

Another downside is the replacement of the hydraulic power steering with the electric one, a decision that made the car less attractive for hardcore drivers but more interesting for those that prefer comfort.

Overall, they were impressed and the 3er is still the team favorite over at C&D, almost 40 years into the making of the first one.
