2012 BMW 1 Series Gets Minor Updates

BMW is giving its entry-level model a light revision for the 2012 model year. The 1 Series coupe and convertible will receive several sporty modifications. Don't expect a power increase, though, as this little sportscar already gives all it's got.

The front fascia in the 128i and 135i underwent a minor restyling that serves both form and function, with the use of the ‘air curtain’ front bumper which diverts air from the front bumper and speeds the air flow up to counteract turbulence in the wheel arch area. Other exterior changes include accents for the headlights and taillights, which now feature a new, all-red housing.

The range of seat upholstery has been revised and now includes “Network” fabric upholstery in Magma Brown, and Oyster or Savanna Beige “Boston” leather. A new interior trim strip color has been added, Alpine White, that is said to improve the 'sporty and fresh look'. Other new interior options are a sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles and an M leather steering wheel, again with shift paddles.

The mechanical side hasn't changed, as the new BMW 1 Series is powered by the same 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engines of the 3-Series, with the naturally-aspirated 128i engine producing 230 horsepower and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) of torque and the twin-turbocharged 135i engine producing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque (406 Nm). The engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic gearbox. The 135i is capable of accelerating to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than 5.3 seconds, with the top speed being electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The new BMW 1 Series will hit dealerships in spring 2011.
