Ladies and gentlemen (drivers), behold the 2012 Audi RS4, Ingolstadt’s latest German Power War fighter, a model that once again arrives as a station wagon (Avant in Audi language). The RS4 Avant is 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) longer and 24 millimeters (0.94 inches) wider than the A4 Avant and rides 20 mm (0.79 inches) closer to the road.
Under the bonnet, we have the RS5 Coupe’s naturally-aspirated 4.2-liter V8 that delivers 450 hp at 8,250 rpm and a peak torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The unit comes with an average fuel efficiency of 11 liters per 100 km (21.4 US mpg).
Further down the power line, we find Audi’s seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic gearbox and the carmaker’s quattro AWD system, which uses a default power split ratio of 40:60 (front-rear), but can send as much as 70 percent to the front or 85 percent to the rear when this is necessary.
The RS4 Avant needs 4.7 seconds for the 0 to 62 mph game, while the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h), with Audi offering an option that raises this to 174 mph (280 km/h).
The list of tech goodies also includes a lowered suspension (-20mm/0.79 inches), a new electromechanical powersteering, as well as beefier brakes (365mm/14.37 inches front discs). However, the list of optional extras includes carbon-ceramic brakes with 380 mm (14.96 inches) rotors and six-piston grabbers for the front axle.
The vehicle rides on 19-inch wheels with 265/35 tires, but customers can order a set of 20-inch wheels that use 265.30 rubber.
The 2012 Audi RS4 Avant will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is scheduled to hit the European market this fall, with a base price of EUR76,600 (USD99,900). As for the US market availability, Audi hasn’t mentioned anything yet.
