2011 VW Polo GTI: First Photos and Details

The 2010 Geneva Auto Show will be the perfect venue for most carmakers to officially unveil their latest contraptions to the world. So is the case with German manufacturer Volkswagen, which is preparing the new 2011 VW Polo GTI for the upcoming event. Volkswagen, however, did have the idea of previewing the fifth generation hot hatch ahead of the Geneva show by releasing the first photos and details of the car. The new Polo GTI, promising to be “the fastest, most focused and cleanest performance Polo yet produced,” is powered by twin-charged 1.4-liter TSI engine mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission, both of which are also used on the Seat Ibiza Cupra. Ride height has been dropped by 15mm compared to the conventional Polo. The power unit develops 180 PS at 6,200 rpm and 184 lbs ft of torque from 2,000 rpm, allowing the Polo GTI to accelerate from naught to sixty in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 142 mph (229 km/h). The car is capable of delivering 47 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 139 g/km of CO2. Styling enhancements were also applied, including a new front bumper with a deep airdam and a honeycomb grille element with horizontal red strips and a GTI badge, as well as new headlight units with the option of LED running lights. At the back, the car features a new rear bumper with a small diffuser and a pair of chrome-tipped exhausts, while the Polo badge is replaced by a simple ‘GTI' version. According to preliminary data, the car will be available both in a three- and five-door versions when it will enter European market this summer, a moment when pricing information will also be announced. autoevolution will be attending the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
