The next-generation Volkswagen Touareg is going to boast multiple modifications over the current model, with the German manufacturer aiming to make the SUV match the economic recession-hit markets. According to a report by autoweek.com, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg, due to be released in 2010 but to be sold as model year 2011, will be 500 pounds to 600 pounds lighter than the current version, a change that would enhance many of the car's attributes.
For example, a reduced total weight translates into better engine performance which, in the case of such a large SUV, plays a very important role. The aforementioned source says the 2011 Touareg will weigh around 5,100 pounds but still, official specs are yet to be unveiled.
Another modification is an increase in size that will allow Volkswagen design a roomier interior and even add third-row seats. However, because we're talking about a minor size different, the seats are likely to be mainly addressed to children. Overall, the car will use several styling elements from the Tiguan, a small model also sold by the German brand in many markets.
But the most important modification will be the price as the aforementioned source says the German manufacturer is planning to cut the price and make the SUV more affordable. We don't know for sure how affordable the new Touareg is going to be but the current generation is sold for $39,300 in the United States.
A thing worth mentioning is that Volkswagen is also considering developing a hybrid version of the SUV but, once again, we're still waiting for some official details sourced from the German manufacturer.
