The lineup which the Touareg will field on the US market starts with the Supercharged Touareg Hybrid, the German manufacturer's first production hybrid electric vehicle. The model, which is hoped to sell quite a bundle, is equipped with a direct injection V6 gasoline engine paired with an electric motor.
Together, they develop 380 horsepower and 428 lbs.-ft. of torque, meaning pretty much the same power offered by a V8, but with the fuel appetite of a V6 (EPA estimated 25 mpg highway).
The other two engines offered are the 3.0l turbocharged V6 TDI Clean Diesel (EPA estimated 28 mpg highway/19 mpg city) and a 3.6l V6 FSI gasoline which provides a fuel consumption figure of 23 mpg highway and 16 mpg city.
All engines, regardless of their nature, are controlled via Volkswagen's eight-speed automatic transmission, with the last two gears acting like overdrives. The carmaker's 4MOTION all-wheel drive system boosted by a rear limited-slip Torsen differential is also offered.
Safety wise, the model comes packing ESP, Hill Start and Hill Descent Assist, airbags, daytime running lights and adaptive brake lights.
The SUV will be offered in the US in nine colors including five new ones: Cool Silver Metallic, Flint Gray Metallic, Toffee Brown Metallic, Night Blue Metallic and Tungsten Silver Metallic (for the Hybrid only).
Three different trims will be up for grabs, Sport, Lux and Executive, each with its own set of wheels. The Hybrid will only come in one trim.
Prices for the new Touareg on the US market have not yet been announced.
