Japanese manufacturer Toyota announced today the details of the 2011 Toyota Highlander, a model which has been tweaked for the new model year in both its aestethic and performance aspects. The new model will bring new styling details, upgraded performance levels and improved optional features list.

When it comes to its engines, the new Highlander will get a revised 2.7l four-cylinder unit (187 horsepower and 252 Nm of peak torque) for the most popular trim level, the 2WD SE. This unit was up until now offered on the Base grade only. Toyota will be offering the 3.5l V6 gasoline engine (270 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 336 Nm of torque at 4,700 rpm ) for the Limited grade (standard).

The hybrid Highlander will also use the revised 3.5l V6 unit, which replaces the previous 3.3l V6. The Hybrid Highlander links the ebgine to a high-torque electric drive motor-generator (total output of 280 horsepower) and a rear-mounted motor for automatic on-demand four-wheel drive traction.

The styling changes brought to the model include a new front fascia, hood and fenders, black rockers with chrome accents, redesigned headlights and tail lamps and newly drawn 17-inch alloy wheels.

The new Highlander SUV will continue to be offered in Base, SE and Limited grades in both two-wheel (2WD) and full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD). All grades will be fitted with the Toyota Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electric Power Steering (EPS) and the anti-lock brake system (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA).

The new Highlander is subject to the same 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty offered by the Japanese manufacturer.
