2011 Suzuki MR Wagon Launched in Japan

For those of you who didn’t know this already, kei cars are a Japanese category of small vehicles that includes passenger cars, vans and pickups. Domestic manufacturers produce these models to exploit local tax and insurance regulations that exempt such cars from the requirement to get adequate parking for the vehicle.

Suzuki is hoping to make a name for itself in the market with the launch of its MR Wagon, an entirely new wagon that features unique and innovative design and improved audio technology, including iPod and USB connectivity. The car has been fully redesigned for the first time in five years and comes with a brand new, frugal 660 cc three-cylinder petrol engine that is mated to a continuously variable transmission.

The carmaker’s kei car is built on a new platform and measures just 3,395 mm(133 inch) in length, 1,475 mm (56 inch) width and 1,625 mm height (63 inchi). The wheelbase is just 65 mm (25 inch) longer than its predecessor at 2.425 mm (97 inch). Suzuki promises the new MR Wagon offers increased passenger space as well as a little more ride comfort and improved stability on the road.

In Japan, the three-cylinder engine comes in either naturally-aspirated or turbocharged form, and produces 54 hp and 64 hp respectively. Also available is a choice between front and all-wheel drive configurations.

The boxy little MR Wagon is already available to order in Japan, with prices starting from JPY1,131,900 ($13,700). Key features include a touch screen audio system on the upper part of the center console and the availability of an ESP system with Hill Hold Control.
