2011 SMS 302 Mustang Unveiled

Racing driver and tuner Steve Saleen finally pulled the wraps off the much anticipated latest addition to the SMS Signature Series cars, the 2011 SMS 302 Mustang, right on time to mark Ford Mustang’s 46th anniversary. The SMS 302 Mustang follows the release of the 2010 SMS 570 Challenger, being the second vehicle out of the three projected American supercars.

It will then be followed by the introduction of the 2011 SMS 620 Camaro later this year. According to Steve Saleen, there will be two SMS 302 versions offered at first, the SMS 302 4V with a normally aspirated 5.0L engine, followed by the SMS 302 SC, using the SMS 296 Supercharger. Customers will be able to choose from a TR3650 six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The first powerplant is a 440 horsepower (328kW) 5.0-liter V8 with a peak torque of 542 Nm, propelling the car from naught to sixty in 4.5 seconds, with a 13.5s quarter mile time. However, with the help of a supercharger, the car gets 535 hp (399 kW) and up to 608 Nm, while a full 1.4 seconds is cut from the quarter mile time.

The car includes a SMS S4 high performance suspension, and Pirelli PZero High Performance 275/35ZR 20 tires on 20" x 9" 5-spoke alloy wheels at the front and 275/40ZR 20 tires on 20" x 10" 5 spoke alloy wheels at the rear. Exterior design changes include a redesigned front fascia, side skirts, and a new rear diffuser that sports an F1 rain light.  Inside, the car boasts Alcantara, leather, and aluminum features.

SMS is in the process of completing the production run of 25 Limited Edition SMS 460 and 460X Mustangs based on the 2010 model year, all powered by a supercharged 4.6L V8 engine. Unfortunately, all of them are sold.
